Pat Ward of Waverly had taken her Golden Retriever Sammie for a ride to the store on October 29, 2005, and when she returned, she was surprised to see the 8 1/2 year old vomiting violently.

Ward thought Sammie might be car sick, but when she didn't stop vomiting later in the day, Ward took Sammie to the vet. Two hours later, Sammie was dead and an autopsy found rat poison in her stomach.

Ward still breaks down in tears when she remembers the day. Now she's left wondering how the rat poison ended up in Sammie, considering there is none in her house or in her backyard where Sammie plays during the day. She suspects someone threw the poison over her fence and hopes that someone will come forward with the truth. But more than finding out what exactly happened to Sammie, Ward also hopes to warn other dog owners of the unforeseen dangers to pets. She hopes pet owners will watch their animals closely when taking them for walks or letting them outside. She is urging pet owners to be wary of poisons, such as car fluids, that can be left in yards or driveways and to watch the animal when they begin to lick or drink something. Pet owners should also watch animals closely for an unusual behavior after being outside. Losing Sammie is like losing a child. She slept with us, ate with us, greeted us, traveled with us ... There is a huge gap in our lives now, said Ward.

A substantial award is being offered by Ward for information on what happened to her dog.
Anyone with clues to what happened to Sammie, or who has information on any animal cruelty issue, should contact the Stray Haven Humane Society at (607) 565-2859.
