It took four Richland County sheriff's deputies and three jolts from a taser to subdue Richard E. Bandy at his home near Shiloh December 28, 2005. The deputies had to force their way into Bandy's residence at 4312 Rome South Road. They had a search warrant signed by Judge Jon Shaffer of Shelby Municipal Court after Bandy failed to show up for a court case.

Deputies who had previous experience with Bandy said he could be violent. Sgt. Glenn Wentz and Deputies R.W. Eichinger, Stacy Dittrich and Jeffrey Alfrey were in the party that approached Bandy's home. Eichinger said Bandy was in the house and spoke with the deputies, but would not let them in. With Wentz' permission, Alfrey kicked in the door and the fight began. Dittrich, who was kicked several times in the stomach by Bandy, said she used her taser on him three, possibly four times before deputies were able to get him down and handcuffed. When it was over, Bandy had a bloody nose and was facing a flood of charges.

First was possession of cocaine, which deputies said they found in the living room. Deputies said they also found a loaded .22 caliber rifle. Since he has a prior drug conviction, Bandy was charged with possession of a weapon under disability. He also was charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and obstructing official business.

Deputies said they also found a German shepherd in the back yard suffering from malnutrition with no food or water available. The dog warden was called. They also found a horse and a goat, reportedly with a broken leg, in a pen. Bandy was charged with animal cruelty.

Bandy had a bloody nose and was treated on site by members of the Franklin Township emergency squad. Detectives were called in and reportedly found more firearms in the house along with numerous stolen items. Detective Robert Mack said further charges of receiving stolen property will be made against Bandy.
