Dog and cock fighting
Houston, TX (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jan 17, 2002
County: Harris

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

What was supposed to be a drug bust by Houston police officers turned into an animal rescue in southeast Houston. Police said that officers tried to issue a drug warrant at a home in the 4900 block of Glen Garry when pit bulls stopped them. Houston SWAT officers found 18 pit bulls inside the home. Authorities said they were part of a dog-fighting and cockfighting operation.

"What we saw in the video were the rolling and the training of some of the dogs," said Jim Boller, with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. SPCA officials said that the dogs had old and new wounds. "These dogs are being fought on a regular basis. Also, we found paraphernalia for cockfighting, as well as some dead birds," Boller said. The three people living in the home were arrested. They face federal drug charges and animal cruelty and dog fighting charges.

"There's a lot of paperwork indicating that this is not just a local thing. This individual was buying and selling and fighting dogs throughout the United States," Boller said. "We do have certificates and documentation for this, showing these animals had definitely been fought in recognized competition."

Undercover narcotics officers also found marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
