Police are investigating the Christmas night theft of 13 puppies and an alligator from a pet shop.
Susan Fitzgerald, owner of Whiskers, Wings and Wild Things, 2696 Easton St. N.E., said someone threw a rock through the front window of her store and stole five cockapoos, four Shih Tzus, three dachapoos (a dachshund and poodle combination) and a pug, each valued between $500 and $600. The alligator was valued at $100.

Fitzgerald, who has owned the pet shop for four years, said the doors to each of the padlocked cages were pried open, a dog house broken and a basket of dog toys and sweaters was also missing. Fitzgerald estimates she lost about $9,000 altogether, although she said the puppies, which were about 9 weeks old, are insured. ``I just hope (the thieves) take care of them,'' she said. ``They must have needed them more than I did.'' Fitzgerald said the pet shop has an alarm for the front door but not the windows. She said the video camera normally filming the store had run out of tape and stopped filming about two hours before the animals were stolen.

Fitzgerald also said she has been the victim of animal theft at her Millvale Avenue farm, where her 3-year-old granddaughter Julie's pony was stolen from its fenced-in pasture last week. The pony, named Judy and valued at $650, was stolen and was last seen eating from a hay rack. Fitzgerald said the pony is uninsured. ``We are looking for another pony,'' she said. ``We're just holding out for a little while because we're hoping (Judy) will come back.''

Stark County Sheriff's Office Detective Ryan Hostetler said the department has contacted local animal shelters and neighboring police departments, but so far there are no leads.
Fitzgerald said she will be installing digital video cameras, a new alarm system and is in the market for a guard dog. ``All you can do is hope they take care of (the animals),'' she said.
Fitzgerald is offering a reward to anyone with information about her missing animals.
