On December 28, 2005, dozens of dogs were removed from a Cattaraugus County property where the President of the local SPCA says they were living in "deplorable conditions." Armed with a warrant, the SPCA and the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Department arrived at a residence on Elton Road in the Town of Farmersville. They found 134 horses and 73 dogs.
Forty-four of the dogs found to be in the worst shape were surrendered by the owner. Kelly Chaffee, President of the SPCA in Cattaraugus County, said it will be up to the courts to determine what, if anything, will happen to the rest of the animals. The dogs taken were small breeds, including Pomeranians, Yorkshire Terriers and Chihauhaus. All have severely matted coats and the SPCA is hoping that local groomers will come forward to help out. Once they are checked for any health problems, groomed and spayed and neutered, the dogs will be available for adoption.
No charges have been filed yet, but Chaffee said they are pending. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
