Two lively little dogs were thrown out like rubbish in what is becoming a common act of cruelty across the state. The fluffy maltese cross dogs, a male and female aged about two, were found by a man at a Lonsdale rubbish dump on December 27, 2005 and taken to the RSPCA's Lonsdale shelter. They are among more than 3000 cats, dogs, kittens and pups who have been abandoned by South Australians since the start of November 2005.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Cassie Anderson was shocked by this latest act of cruelty to man's best friend. "It's shocking . . . words can't describe my anger at this," Ms Anderson said. "We accept dogs and we'd rather they come here than be dumped somewhere else. The guy who brought them in was dumping his rubbish and they were just sitting near the rubbish dump."
Ms Anderson said the shelter was the last stop for many dogs, who had to be put down after being neglected by their owners. "This is the end of the road for them if they aren't adopted," she said. "It breaks my heart if they don't find a home. "They're adorable and they've come out of their shell since they were brought in." Other than some matted fur, the dogs were in fairly good condition when they were brought to the shelter.

RSPCA spokeswoman Emily Vatkovic said "dumping season" was expected to run until March 2006. The RSPCA and Animal Welfare League want people seeking a pet to visit shelters at Lonsdale, Wingfield or Elizabeth West.
