More than 30 animals were removed from a home in Westwood that the director of the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals referred to as "grotesque." The SPCA was called about a dead cat in the yard of a home on the 2700 block of Montana Avenue on December 27, 2005. SPCA director Harold Dates told News 5's John London that digital photos of the inside of the home were used to obtain search warrants, and he said the home had one of the worst displays of fecal matter and disheveled conditions that he'd ever seen. "I couldn't walk around in this stuff," Dates said. "You can't breathe in there. The animals can't sit down without getting in fecal material or urine-soaked newspaper."
Next door, 25 dead cats and four dead dogs were found in a basement freezer. Those animals were also removed, and 16 live cats still in the home will be taken on December 29, 2005, officials said. Two women who lived in the homes have been hospitalized, but it's not certain if their medical conditions are related to their living conditions, London reported. "I'd be afraid to go inside because of the smell that's outside," said James Gilligan, a neighbor. Health department officials, police officers and fire crews were also called to the home on Wednesday morning to help with an inspection and to remove the animals. Officials told News 5 that animal cruelty charges are possible against the women, but at this point, they're cooperating with the investigation. The women owned two houses, one at 2795 Montana, the other at 2797 Montana. Animals were discovered inside both homes.
