On June 12, 2000, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Jonathan B. Holsomback, doing business as The Holsomback Family in Fairmount, Ga., settled violations of the Horse Protection Act after Holsomback admitted guilt in the case.

"Holsomback admitted showing a sore horse after we caught him doing it," said W. Ron DeHaven, deputy administrator for animal care with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, a part of USDA's marketing and regulatory mission programs mission area. "Soring a horse isn't only against the law, it is cruel and abusive. We will continue to vigorously pursue federal cases against violators of the HPA."

Holsomback is disqualified for one year from showing, exhibiting, or entering any horse in any horse show or exhibition. He is also disqualified from judging, managing, or otherwise participating in any horse show or horse exhibition.
