The 20-year-old woman's ordeal began when she was exercising her crossbred dog Iwi in a Riverbank St park about 5pm on December 20, 2005.
A man drove up in a blue four-door car, pointed a sawn-off shotgun at her and ordered her and the dog into the vehicle, Detective John Fagan said. They were then taken on a 10-minute drive to an isolated part of the Akatarawa Cemetery where the man parked the car. He loaded the gun, and allegedly pointed it at the woman before swinging it around and shooting the dog in the head. As Iwi lay dying, the woman pleaded to be let out of the car and to be allowed to take him with her. The man dropped them off on Akatarawa Rd, near Potaka St.
The woman ran to a friend's house nearby to get help, leaving Iwi by the roadside. The pair soon returned to the dog, but Iwi had already died of his injuries. The woman was traumatised from the loss of a much-loved pet but was not physically hurt.
Police wanted to hear from anyone who might have seen the incidents at the park or the cemetery. Mr Fagan said police were looking for Craig McKelvie, a 35-year-old European man from Wainuiomata. He is of medium build and 1.71 metres tall.

Craig McKelvie, 35, of Wainuiomata, had pleaded not guilty to seven charges including kidnapping, threatening to kill and wilfully ill-treating an animal.
He was discharged, and a Wellington District Court jury of six women and six men sworn in yesterday were today dismissed.
McKelvie has been accused of kidnapping a woman in Upper Hutt while she was exercising her dog in December last year.

A man charged with kidnapping a woman and shooting her dog has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Craig McKelvie, 35, of Wainuiomata entered his pleas to seven charges including kidnapping, threatening to kill and wilfully ill-treating an animal at the Wellington District Court.
A jury of six women and six men were sworn in this morning.
McKelvie has been accused of kidnapping a woman in Upper Hutt while she was exercising her dog in December last year.
Police say he drove her to nearby Akatarawa Cemetery, where he pointed a shotgun at her before shooting her dog.

Craig McKelvie, 35, of Wainuiomata, appeared in Upper Hutt District Court December 23, 2005 charged with presenting a firearm, Detective John Fagan of Upper Hutt said. He was arrested at 10am without incident. "Police intend to lay further charges," Mr Fagan said.
McKelvie was remanded in custody until January 26, 2006. Mr Fagan said police would still like to hear from any witnesses to the incident or from anyone with information about a 1996 green Honda Civic, registration UA3539. | Source: Nz News - December 23, 2005
