Seven Rottweiler-mix puppies just may have a chance at a long healthy life after a Smith County Constable deputy saved them December 19, 2005.
Precinct 2 Constable, Frank Creath, said one of his deputies was traveling on County Road 1261 Monday night when he found the puppies along the road in the cold. "They were all huddled up together when he saw them and gathered them up. He brought them back here and we began feeding them right away," he said. Creath said the pups gobbled down two pounds of food and lapped up a large amount of water within minutes. "These dogs were starving and were so thirsty they were drinking the water spilled on each other's backs. Now that's thirsty," he said.
Creath said the puppies were being taken to a veterinarian for checkups, but he hopes some Smith County residents will want to adopt the pooches. "This was not an animal control problem, because the deputy had not been called out on a reported animal cruelty. He just happened to find them," he said. Creath said that if his office receives information as to who dumped the litter of brothers and sisters then animal cruelty charges would be filed.
"If we find out who abandoned these animals then the person can face up to seven state jail felony charges of animal cruelty," he said. Creath said pet owners dumping their unwanted animals in the county has become a huge problem and that people need to have their animals spayed or neutered.
The puppies, who are being housed at Creath's office, need a home for Christmas and Creath said as soon as they check out with the veterinarian, he would give them away to good families.
