The University of California, Davis, has paid a $4,815 fine to the federal government for the death of seven research monkeys who died in 2004, the university said in a press release. The U.S. Department of Agriculture investigated the incident and found that UC Davis violated federal regulations.
"We deeply regret this sad incident and we accepted the USDA's fine without challenge," said Stan Nosek, vice chancellor for administration at UC Davis in a statement. The seven female cynomolgous monkeys died after a heater in the room where they were housed malfunctioned and overheated. The temperature in the room had risen to 115 degrees after a ventilator failed and began blowing hot air in the room.
The room, in the Animal Resources Service facility south of campus, is located separately from the campus' California National Primate Research Center. After the incident, 32 other monkeys housed in the room were relocated to the primate center. The room has not been used for housing animals since.
