Inverell woman Deborah Bartlett says her 14-month-old Dalmatian cross dog "Bob is lucky to be alive after someone placed a sheep ring over his scrotum. She said that Bob had never chased sheep or caused any other problems to her knowledge.

"If you didn't want the dog near your home a simple phone call was all that was needed. Instead you put a very kind natured animal through hell, Ms Bartlett said in her letter. She described Bob as big, friendly and lolloping.

Ms Bartlett, who lives on acreage on Toms Drive on the outskirts of Inverell, arrived home a fortnight ago after being away overnight to find Bob quiet and shivering. When she went to pat him she noticed the sheep ring on his scrotum. Inverell Vet Clinic veterinarian Bob Hunter said that the dog was in a "fair bit of pain when it was brought in to the surgery. "It was a pretty cruel thing to do, he said.

Dr Hunter said that he removed the sheep ring from the dog and kept him in for observation overnight. He had hoped that circulation to the scrotum may have been re-established - but this was not to be. "The dog could have developed gangrene and so it was decided to desex him, Dr Hunter said. It was not the first time in his career as a veterinarian that he had seen this happen to a dog, he said. The vet's bill has left Ms Bartlett $500 out of pocket.

The matter has been reported to the RSPCA and police. She said that the person responsible obviously would have had to have access to a sheep ring and knowledge of how to use it.
