A family of felines left out in the cold, abandoned on the street, discarded in a suitcase. The puzzling discovery was made in front of 246 MacDougal St. in the Ocean Hill section of Brooklyn. It was December 16, 2005, late morning, when a passerby noticed a black, soft vinyl suitcase on the sidewalk with trashcans. But there was something unusual about this discarded suitcase. There appeared to something inside.
Police from the 73rd Precinct responded, and unzipped the case to find a mother cat and three kittens. They were taken to an animal control shelter on Linden Boulevard, where officials said the kittens were lucky to be alive.
NYC Animal Care & Control Supervisor Joyce Clemmons described what police found.
"Inside the suitcase was a momma and her three babies, in the freezing cold weather," she said. Clemmons estimated the age of the mother, who was mostly gray, at two years, and the three kittens, different colors, at only five weeks. They appeared to be healthy, well cared for, but discarded, out with the trash by someone who just wanted them gone.
Clemmons said of the people who dumped the pets, "I don't know who they are, but I think it's very sad as to what they did. Apparently they didn't care about momma and her three babies, to leave them out on the street."
Animal control officials hope to pair the felines with good families. To find out about adoption, contact Animal Care and Control of New York City, 2336 Linden Blvd. Brooklyn, NY 11208.
