An NYU student was charged with animal cruelty and abandonment over the way he treated his dog, Dudley, authorities said.
Cleveland Edwards, 25, who was taken to the 67th precinct station house near his Brooklyn home, later accused officers of endangering his health by smoking cigarettes in front of him. "He was annoyed that someone was smoking in his presence and told them, 'I'm upset and I'm gonna make a civilian complaint!' He claimed that they were 'endangering his health,' " a source said.
Edwards, who had an NYU student ID and claimed to attend the school, was nabbed at noon at his apartment on Clarkson Avenue in Flatbush for twice abandoning Dudley, authorities said. Edwards denied owning the dog.
Dudley, a 7-year-old cocker spaniel, had a broken rib and four broken teeth and is recovering, said ASPCA spokesman Joe Pentangelo.
In early November 2005, Edwards allegedly left Dudley tied to a light post on Kings Highway, not far from where he lives. When a neighbor passing by recognized the pooch, he returned him to Edwards, Pentangelo said.
On Nov. 28, he again abandoned Dudley at the same spot, authorities said and the same neighbor recognized the pet a second time and called cops. Pentangelo said X-rays on the dog revealed his injuries Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
