An Imperial Beach family is questioning the actions of police after their pet dog was shot and killed. It happened December 14, 2005, when officers were chasing a stolen car suspect. One officer ran into a backyard and was confronted by a barking dog. Police said the officer feared for his safety so he shot the two-year-old Neapolitan Mastiff named Ramon. "As the officer pursued the suspect a large dog came at the officer and fearing for his safety he was forced to pull his service weapon and fire at the dog," San Diego Police Lt. Jeff Sferra said.

Ramon's owners Enrique and Amalia Arroyo were shocked when they heard the news about their dog's death. "I'm mad because they could have done better than that. They can do a lot better then shoot my innocent dog. He was in his yard," Enrique Arroyo said. "It's a dog, an innocent dog. He's doing his work. He's watching his house and was watching his family," Amalia Arroyo said. Police said every situation is different, and in this case the officer felt he had to shoot the dog to protect himself. The Arroyos said they might consider filing a claim with the city.
