Two youths and an adult have been arrested for their alleged participation in a recent burglary and theft at the Newark animal shelter.

Deputy Duane Grice took a report Dec. 8, 2005 from Newark city employees regarding a dog being stolen from the animal shelter with the dog's owner being listed as a suspect.

In the report, Grice said the clips holding a chain link fence to the posts had been cut and the fence pulled up to gain access to the shelter area and allowing some animals to escape.

Grice said he went to the home of the juvenile suspects and reportedly found the missing dog.

According to Grice, the girl gave a written confession regarding the theft of the dog. Grice learned the girl had outstanding juvenile warrants and she was arrested and taken to the White River Juvenile Detention Center. She was also charged with breaking and entering and theft.

The next day Grice said he met with a boy who also allegedly gave a written confession to participating in the incident. He too was charged with breaking and entering and theft.

On Dec. 12, 2005, Grice said he spoke with another suspect, identified as 20-year-old Dustin L. Willis of 745 Village St.

Willis told Grice he took the youths to the shelter to see if their dog had been locked up. When they found the dog, Willis said he cut open the fence so they could get the dog. Willis said he then took the youths and their dog home.

Willis was arrested and taken to the Independence County jail where he was charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass and theft.

Willis was given a Jan. 4 court date.
