A Vacaville man suspected of hurling a pair of cats from a second-story balcony December 12, 2005 was arrested on suspicion of two counts of animal cruelty. John Patrick Stack, 38, was subsequently booked into Solano County Jail.

Shortly after 4:20 p.m., police responded to reports of a disturbance and possible animal cruelty at the man's apartment, in the 1200 block of Callen Street. Upon arrival officers found two cats, reportedly suffering from trauma and bleeding.

Stack told police that he had tried to separate the felines, which he said were fighting on the railing, and they fell. A witness informed police that the cats were seen airborne, as if thrown.

The cats landed about 30 feet from the edge of the balcony, police said.

Humane Animal Services took custody of the cats and transported them to a veterinarian for care. The trauma suffered by the animals was likely caused intentionally, not accidentally, the HAS officer told police. Both cats are expected to survive their injuries.
