A Montgomery County man was convicted of felony animal cruelty and sentenced to two 18-month prison terms for stabbing four calves in Monrovia. Mark Willis was convicted of entering a Monrovia cattle farm in March 2004 to gut a six-month-old calf and stab three others.

Harold Domer, director of Frederick County Animal Control, said Willis was convicted of two felony counts of animal cruelty. Willis was also ordered to pay the owner of the calves, Aubrey Mullineaux, $1,059.25 in damages. Willis will also be under a three-year probation after his release.

Willis was arrested after Frederick County Animal Control staff helped Maryland State Police in the investigation. Many fliers and announcements were made to neighbors in order to gain details of the incident. Domer said the extensive cooperation between the agencies led to Williss timely arrest. It wasnt something we developed overnight, he said, but an in-depth, detailed investigation with state police.

Mullineaux, a farmer and 35-year resident of Frederick County, lives on 5 acres on Gladhill Brothers Road and keeps more than two dozen steers on his property. The farmer said he investigated suspicious noises the night his calves were stabbed, but merely thought that his cattle were frightened of some unseen nuisance.

One of the calves died at the scene, another suffered a slash down his spine that was so bad, recovery was impossible and a veterinarian had to put it down. The other two animals recovered from the attack.
