A western Iowa animal shelter is seeking homes for two puppies found inside a trash bin in December. The 4-month-old Boxer/Labrador Retriever mix puppies were found with a bag of dog food in Council Bluffs. ''If they were not found, they would have froze to death,'' said Loren Knauss, a Pottawattamie County supervisor.
The Pottawattamie County Animal Shelter is now seeking people to adopt the puppies named Woody and Smokey by Jimmy Rojas, the man who found the dogs and took them inside his home, said Melinda Brink, a county animal control officer. Animal control was called after Rojas was unable to find new homes on his own, Brink said. There are no leads on who placed the dogs in the trash can, Brink said.
She said animal control officers often see cases where people abandon dogs instead of taking them to the shelter for adoption. ''People do terrible things all the time,'' Brink said.
The cost for adopting a dog is $125, which includes spaying or neutering, shots, a microchip ID and worming.
