It seems that Smokey really dies have nine lives. Virginia Beach Animal Control officers said the cat was tortured by his owners. "Smokey is an abused cat," said Dale Bartlett at the Virginia Beach SPCA "You can see he still has paint on his ears. He was shot by paintballs."

Animal Control officers said he was not only shot with a paintball gun at least 10 times, but Smokey survived other tortures. They said he was thrown against the wall numerous times and punched. He was also put inside a dryer and that dryer was turned on.

Siblings Mickey and Molly McFayden are charged with animal cruelty. They live at the Linkhorn Bay Apartments off of Birdneck. Brian Atkins lives next to the accused. He's disgusted.

"It's hard to believe," he said. "I have two cats and I see my son play with them. It's hard to understand how anyone could treat another living being like that."

Now, Smokey is in good hands. He's being nursed back into good health by the SPCA He also came in underweight and had several broken teeth. "We want to find him a home with someone who will treat him right and give him the love he deserves," said Dale Bartlett. "He's a sweet cat."

The SPCA said Smokey will likely be put up for adoption after the McFayden's go to court in early February.
