On July 18, 2005, animal control was called to a Palm Springs' residence regarding abandoned animals. After an investigation, animal control removed 2 dogs and 2 cats from a property that was full of trash. The house was empty with no signs of anyone living there and most of the furniture was gone. No signs of food, however there was a swimming pool in the back yard that provided the animals with water. The pool was still turned and on the water was clean.
The owner, who was out of state at that time, was contacted and stated she was moving from the property and was not planning on returning. Her comments toward the animals were, " They belong to my husband and are not my responsibility".
Lisa Ray Moore, admitted to having divorced her husband several months back and she had not spoken to her husband since the separation. Further investigation showed that Ms. Moore had adopted the animals herself, after the separation.
Animal Control had to request a warrant for Ms. Moore's arrest. Original charges were abandonment of animals and failure to provide care. At the trial readiness conference, Ms. Moore accepted the plea and in the interests of Justice the first charge of abandonment was dropped. Ms. Moore has since relocated elsewhere in California.
Moore was convicted on December 12, 2005 in Riverside County Superior by accepting the District Attorney's plea offer. Under the plea deal, Moore/Church was given 3 years probation, forbidden to own animals, allow Law Enforcement and Humane Animal Control Law Enforcement to search for animal during the time of probation, pay restitution for investigation and pay court cost.
