George Rayot, 52, of East 124th Street, was charged with animal cruelty for repeatedly hitting his 1-year-old orange male tabby, named Rusty, on numerous occasions, authorities said.

The ASPCA was informed of the beatings Dec. 5, 2005, by neighbors who said they heard the cat, which Rayot had taken in as a stray, wailing and crying, officials said.
They took the animal to their animal hospital on the Upper East Side, where they found he had internal bleeding and a fractured jaw.

Rayot was arrested after a weeklong investigation in which neighbors provided "very helpful" information, authorities said. He made statements implicating himself, officials said. The man also had an injury to his left hand, which he allegedly used to hold Rusty while hitting him with the other.
Rayot faces up to a year in jail if convicted.

Rusty has been nursed back to health by ASPCA workers and soon will be available for adoption.
