In December 2005, the general manager of the Coast Hotel and a pest-control worker have been cited for 14 counts of animal cruelty for poisoning pigeons downtown.
Hotel general manager Freyda Stephens and Peter Brown, an employee of EcoLab, were each fined $2,870 -- $205 per violation. The citations were filed in Chelan County District Court on Wednesday by James Rowe, the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society's animal-control officer.
City animal-cruelty ordinances forbid leaving poison or poisoned food or drink where it is accessible to animals, except for "reasonable use of rodent poison, insecticides, fungicides or slug bait" or when the action is carried out by a government agency.
Stephens was cited for hiring EcoLab and Brown for poisoning the pigeons. The two can pay the fines or ask for a hearing.
