Police say 6 pit-bulls were literally starving to death, tethered to posts in the backyard of a Gladewater home and were only able to save 4 of them. Police also believe the owner may once have used the animals in dogfights. Investigators estimate that the 6 pit bulls had not been fed in 3 to 4 weeks.
"Its a shame just to let living breathing animals suffer like that, to starve, all they had was rainwater old and green" said investigating officer Vance Callahan of the Gladewater police. They were so emaciated and weak they couldn't even lift their heads when approached. Not suprising since they were kept in place with heavy logging chains. 23 year old Quaylon Calloway, well known to police on many drug and gun charges, had simply left the dogs in his backyard. He has since disappeared. "He just abandoned his animals and failed to feed, water and shelter them from the elements" Callahan said.
Police tried to save the animals, but in the time it took to get carriers out to pick them up, two of the dogs died. "They were barely breathing i mean so shallow like seemed forever between two breathes, their ribs were sticking out they were pitiful is what they were".
The remaining 4 dogs were taken by police to the Gregg county humane society shelter. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Quaylon Calloway is asked to call Gladewater police. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
