On October 29, 2005, a Naselle county woman said her cat was shot while crossing her landlord's driveway. The cat's owner stated that she was outside when she heard a gunshot and discovered that her landlord had shot her cat. When asked why he shot the cat, her landlord, Lowell Stambaugh, stated it was because the cat was in his yard. When the cat's owner told Stambaugh that she was calling the police, she said he told her to 'go ahead, it's my property, I'll shoot anything I want". The cat's owner states that this is the second cat of hers that her landlord has shot.

The woman states that the District Attorney told her that they would be charging Stambaugh with Animal Cruelty 1st Degree, which is a class C felony in the state of Washington.
