On August 8, 2005, a warrant was issued for Lynette Washington for animal cruelty. Due to a previous encounter with Animal Control, Washington had taken China to a vet for a rabies shot. Vet papers from the visit state that Chinas condition was emaciated and needed further treatment in July 2005.
In August 2005, Animal Control Officer Angie Gromlich came across China running loose in the neighborhood. China was emaciated and dehydrated as well as lactating for her 5 recent puppies. Gromlich took her to the vet and stayed as a fecal test was conducted, which was positive for hookworms and whipworms.
China and her puppies were then signed over to Animal Control, but later had to be euthanized due to insufficient manpower to rehabilitate them.
On November 2, 2005, Washington was convicted of cruelty to animals. She received 12 months in jail with 11 months and 15 days suspended. When she is released from jail, Washington will have to perform 80 hours of community service. She has to pay a $1000.00 fine, banned from owning companion animals and must pay restitution to the City of NNAS for medical treatment on China. Washington was placed on probation for one year.
