In September 1995, the U.S. Department of Agriculture charged licensed animal dealers Bruce and Nancy Trammell, doing business as Trammell Trail Treasures in Temple, Ga., with violations of the Animal Welfare Act. The USDA complaint was issued July 11.

Dale F. Schwindaman, deputy administrator for regulatory enforcement and animal care in USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, said that the charges against the Trammells and Trammell Trail Treasures are based on APHIS inspections.

APHIS inspectors found that from May 1994 through August 1994 the Trammells and Trammell Trail Treasures failed to:

--maintain programs of disease control and prevention, euthanasia, and adequate veterinary care under the supervision and assistance of a veterinarian;

--provide for guinea pigs structurally sound housing facilities in good repair so as to protect the animals from injury, contain the animals, and restrict the entrance of other animals;

--store supplies of food so as to protect them adequately against deterioration, molding, or contamination by vermin;

--provide a suitable method for rapidly eliminating excess water from rabbit housing facilities;

--keep the premises clean and in good repair and free of accumulation of trash;

--maintain complete records showing the acquisition, disposition, and identification of animals;

--keep rabbit primary enclosures clean;

--establish and maintain an effective pest control program; and

--utilize a sufficient number of employees so as to maintain the prescribed level of husbandry practices.
