In May 1996, the U.S. Department of Agriculture settled AWA violations charged against licensed animal exhibitor Rodger L. Cederberg, owner and president of Deer Acres, Inc., in Pinconning, Mich., agreed to a civil penalty of $15,000 with $3,000 payable immediately, $5000 to be used for facility improvements and repairs and $7,000 suspended.

APHIS charged Cederberg with failing to:

-- construct and maintain housing facilities for animals so that they are structurally sound and in good repair in order to protect the animals from injury, contain them securely, and restrict other animals from entering;

-- store supplies of food to protect them against contamination;

-- construct and maintain indoor and sheltered animal housing facilities that are adequately ventilated;

-- construct and maintain animal housing facilities whose surfaces may be readily cleaned and sanitized or replaced when necessary;

-- provide a suitable method for the rapid elimination of excess water and wastes from housing facilities for animals.

-- keep food and water receptacles clean and sanitized;

-- maintain records of the acquisition, disposition, and identification of animals;

-- maintain primary enclosures from animals in a clean and sanitary condition;

-- keep the premises clean and in good repair and free of accumulations of trash, junk, waste and discarded matter, and to control weeds, grasses and bushes;

-- establish and maintain and effective program for the control of pests;

-- maintain animals in primary enclosures in compatible groups;

-- establish and maintain programs of disease control and prevention, euthanasia, and adequate veterinary care under the supervision and assistance of a doctor of veterinary medicine; and,

-- individually identify animals as required.
