A North Toledo woman returned home to find her door wide open and her two dogs burned. Candice Williams says she believe burglars broke into her home on Nov 27, heard the dogs barking, and used a blow torch to keep them away.

The dogs were taken to a West Toledo emergency animal clinic for treatment, and given medication and special ointment for their burns, said veterinarian Kittsen McCumber. She said one dog was so badly burned, three of its legs had to be bandaged because the pads were peeling off.

McCumber says burns this severe usually require a 24 hour hospital stay and an IV, but Williams says she can't afford that. She's getting help already, though. Just minutes after the story first aired on 13abc Action News at Eleven Sunday night, calls began pouring into the clinic and the ABC newsroom. One concerned viewer rushed right down to the clinic with a check.

"You hear about all these terrible things that happen to people and (Hurricane) Katrina and everything and you try and help them, but you're not there. But when you see something like this happening right in your own hometown and the clinic is only down at the end of the street from me ....I had to come help right away," said Casey Yarder, who is a dog owner herself.

Though the dogs are getting help, they're not out of the woods yet. The vet says there's a risk of infection, and it's possible they won't make it.
