In February 2000, the U.S. Department of Agriculture charged animal exhibitors Jan Marasek and Joan Byron-Marasek, doing business as Tigers Only Preservation Society in Clarksburg, N.J., with violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

"We believe that Tigers Only needs a lot of work," said W. Ron DeHaven, deputy administrator for animal care with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, a part of USDA's marketing and regulatory programs mission area. "I hope that through these charges and the eventual outcome, we can ensure that the Maraseks' animals receive proper treatment under the law."

APHIS inspectors found that the Maraseks failed to:

-- Maintain programs of disease control and prevention, euthanasia, and adequate veterinary care under the supervision and assistance of a veterinarian and failed to provide veterinary care to animals in need of care;

-- Maintain complete records showing the acquisition, disposition, and identification of animals;

-- Allow APHIS employees to conduct a complete inspection of their animal facilities;

-- Construct structurally sound housing facilities and maintain them in good repair;

-- Provide for the removal and disposal of animal wastes so as to minimize vermin infestation, odors, and disease hazards;

-- Provide animals kept outdoors with adequate protection from inclement weather;

-- Provide a suitable method to rapidly eliminate excess water from outdoor housing facilities for animals;

-- Construct and maintain primary enclosures so as to provide sufficient space to allow each animal to make normal postural and social adjustments with adequate freedom of movement;

-- Clean primary enclosures;

-- Establish and maintain an effective program for the control of pests;

-- Provide animals with wholesome and uncontaminated food; and

-- Keep premises clean and free of trash.
