USDA charges animal exhibitor Latham, NY (US)Incident Date: Monday, Jan 31, 2000 County: Albany
Disposition: USDA Citation
Person of Interest: Village Wholesale
In February 2000, the U.S. Department of Agriculture charged animal exhibitor Village Wholesale, Inc. doing business in Latham, N.Y., with violations of the Animal Welfare Act.
"We believe that Village Wholesale violated a previous USDA administrative law judge's order regarding their involvement with animals," said W. Ron DeHaven, deputy administrator for animal care with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, a part of USDA's marketing and regulatory programs mission area. "Such a disrespect for the law cannot be tolerated."
APHIS inspectors found that for at least the last 2 years Village Wholesale has operated without a license. Inspectors also found that they failed to provide structurally sound housing, store food properly, and construct a barrier between the enclosures of young servals and the viewing public.
