On November 21, 2005, two men have been charged with animal cruelty after a pelican was attacked and left to die on the NSW south coast.
Police received reports of youths throwing rocks at a pelican in the Wollongong suburb of Bellambi.
Officers arrived to find the seriously injured bird being cared for by residents.
"The pelican was taken to a vet but was so badly injured it was unable to be saved and was euthanised," the statement said.
Witnesses reported seeing four young men throwing rocks off the sea wall shortly before the pelican was found.
Two men, aged 27 and 20, were arrested at a Woonona residence at 10pm (AEDT) yesterday and charged with committing an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal.
They were given bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on December 20.
