November 20, 2005, two toddlers toting kittens were found walking along a major road early, the younger child clad only in a dirty diaper, police arrested their mother on charges of child neglect.

Lesa J. Dalton, 26, answered the front door of her Antilles Terrace home only after police thumped on it for several minutes, Volusia County sheriff's deputies said. Dalton was not aware the children had been gone, they said.

Deputies found the house after canvassing a neighborhood off the 1500 block of North Normandy Boulevard where residents spotted the two children about 9 a.m. Once inside, deputies discovered a 9-month-old child who was also wearing a soiled diaper. The house was unsanitary and smelled of cat urine, deputies said.

The children were taken by the Department of Children & Families after deputies discovered that Dalton had a warrant for failure to appear for a charge involving the sale of alcohol to a minor. At least three malnourished cats and a dog were also taken by animal-control officers, deputies said.

Deputies arrested Dalton on three counts of child neglect and transported her to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
