Police are investigating a local dog owner suspected of animal cruelty after a rescue league seized more than a dozen feces-encrusted dogs from her home in November.
Fifteen dogs were housed in outside kennels with no water or dry shelter, according to the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. All dogs were matted with feces and undernourished, and many suffered from flea infestations, parasites and skin and dental problems, the SPCA said.
A Pittsfield police officer responding to a call of a loose dog reported seeing the 15 dogs tied up with lack of shelter and surrounded by an excessive amount of animal waste, according to Pittsfield police chief Robert Wharem. Members of the Stratham-based SPCA seized the dogs Thursday. Officers are waiting for veterinary reports before deciding what charges, if any, to bring against the owner. Police refused to release the owners name.
The SPCA said the dogs three adult great Pyrenees, a litter of six great Pyrenees, three dachshunds, a 4-day-old puppy and two Newfoundland puppies were taken to the organizations adoption facility in Stratham. It encouraged donations, and said the dogs will be available for adoption when they are healthy enough. Pittsfield town officials have wrestled with zoning issues for impromptu kennels in their community, but Wharem said the owner under investigation did not appear to be running a business.
