In February 1997, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Antonio Alentado, a licensed animal dealer doing business in Miami, Fla., agreed to a consent decision and order regarding violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

Alentado neither admitted nor denied any violations of the AWA but agreed to stop violating the act. He also agreed to a civil penalty of $5,000. Of that, $2,000 will be used to improve and repair primate facilities, $2,500 is suspended pending no further violations, and the remaining amount will be paid to the Treasurer of the United States.

APHIS inspectors found AWA violations in the areas of disease control, recordkeeping, and housing.
