A grand jury indicted a former San Juan County sheriff's deputy on a charge of extreme cruelty to animals.
Mario Marin, of Bloomfield, is accused of running down and killing a dog on January second after it killed the family dog and bit his sister. Marin allegedly chased down the fleeing dogs in his pickup truck and ran over the Saint Bernard three times with his truck. At one point witnesses said he drove onto the sidewalk to hit the dog.
Marin also faces a single charge of battery in municipal court. That charge stems from an altercation between Marin and witness Garry Foster, who followed Marin to his home after the incident.
Extreme cruelty to animals is a fourth-degree felony carrying a possible conviction of 18 months in prison and a fine of ten-thousand dollars.
Case UpdatesMarin has claimed self-defense. Defense attorney Victor Titus has filed a motion to quash a grand jury indictment against Mario Marin of Bloomfield.
