more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

A man in the City of the Crosses is accused extreme animal cruelty after allegedly hanging a dog.
The Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department says 20 year old Enrique Barreno has been charged with Extreme Animal Cruelty for hanging a three year old black Labrador.

Investigators tell ABC-7 that Mr. Barreno was fired as a landscaper at a home in Las Cruces. Two days later, he came back to burglarize the home and was attacked by the dog. Officers then allege that Mr. Barreno hung the dog with an extension cord over a beam.

The dog's owner spoke to our New Mexico Mobile Newsroom and says the dog, named Arthur, quote" did not have a mean bone in his body."

A jury in the City of the Crosses found a 21-year-old man guilty of breaking into a woman's home last year and hanging her dog.

Friday was the first and last day of trial for 21-year-old Enrique Barreno. Mr. Barreno was found guilty both counts against him: burglary and extreme animal cruelty.

Barreno could serve 4 1/2 years in prison, however no date has been set for Barreno's sentencing.

The dog's owner, Gerta Peralta, recognized Mr. Barreno as a landscaper working on her front lawn the week her dog died. Two days after his company fired him, Ms. Peralta found her 3 year old dog Arthur hanging by an electric cord strung over an open doorway.

Mr. Barreno became a suspect when Sheriff's Deputies say they found his shoe prints in the desert leading from Ms. Peralta's house straight to his.

During Friday testimony, Ms. Peralta relived the horror of trying to save her dog.

Ms. Peralta told the court, "Arthur weighed 80 pounds...he was really heavy...I was having trouble trying to get my body under his and trying to use my right hand to undo the noose. But it was such a perfect, tight noose, I couldn't undo it. So I had to let him go so I could get to the telephone."

Mr. Barreno's lawyer attempted to place some doubt in jurors' minds, saying there were no witnesses, no fingerprints, and no blood to prove he killed Ms. Peralta's dog.
