On May 21st, 1998, a cow stolen from Arthur Bailey's dairy farm was tied to a vehicle and then dragged for approximately 5 miles down a dark paved road, scraping and disemboweling the cow in the process. The dragging which started in Lewis County, ended in Oneida County with the bovine being dumped, bleeding and dying in the Adirondack High School parking lot. The next morning, the cow was discovered, dead.
Michael L. Croniser of Boonfille (Oneida County, NY) and James Patrick Bourgeois, 19 of Leyden (Lewis County, NY) were arrested on Sunday. The cow was dragged till it became disemboweled, and they left it to die overnight in front of Adirondack Central High School. Croniser's pickup truck was used and he is suspected of being the driver. Both men had earlier been asked to leave the school grounds, where a dance was being held. The killing of the cow and leaving it's body is through to be a form of defiance or retaliation. Bourgeois works for Ethan Allen Furniture (315) 942-4471 of Boonville, NY. Croniser works for the auto parts store Pep Boys (315) 768-1015 in the busy commercial district of New Hartford, just outside of Utica.
