Buster and Colbert's (now ex) girlfriend Jacki Clever were severely beaten. Buster was beaten with a hammer and left for dead for 2 days in the hot sun.

After the violent attack on Buster, he allegedly waited for Buster's owner (Barry's girlfriend) to come home, and he reportedly proceeded to beat her on the front lawn; police were apparently called to the scene and allegedly found him on top of her, pummeling her head into the ground. The newspaper reports that he was arrested for felony domestic battery and resisting arrest. Mere weeks before that, Mr. Colbert made national headlines for driving while intoxicated and allowing a minor (a 7 year old boy) to drive his car.

It was reported that, from jail, Mr. Colbert called a friend to "bury the evidence" so as to avoid additional charges; however his friend allegedly told police about the dog. Buster was beaten on March 15, and lay dying in the field for two days; as he was not found until March 17 at 2:30 p.m. by some neighbors.

Buster lost an eye in the attack and is nearly blind in the remaining eye. He also suffered a deep gash on his forehead, and his jaw was shattered.

Barry G. Colbert, 40, pleaded guilty Monday to a felony charge of animal cruelty. Combined with an earlier plea to an aggravated domestic battery charge for beating up his girlfriend, he faces up to 20 years in prison. Colbert will be sentenced on both charges at a date still to be determined.

Assistant State Attorney Mike Halkitis said Colbert is definitely looking at prison time. Colbert entered an open plea to both charges, which means he received no promises about a possible sentence from prosecutors or the judge. He essentially is putting himself at the mercy of Circuit Judge Daniel Diskey.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges.
