A 16-year-old South Memphis girl is being investigated for animal cruelty after officers say she almost beat a puppy to death. The dogs owner is pressing charges and says she wants the teenager held responsible for what she did.

Scooter is a 4-month-old old German Shepard-Chow mix.

Michele Malone is Scooter's owner, "He walked by. She took the bat- hit him and it broke his whole leg from his hip, I called the police that night."

Officer Calvin Walker is with the Memphis Shelby County Humane Society. He says, "Scooter couldn't even walk. He had to be carried. I took him to an emergency medical facility on Summer Avenue and when we got there they took him right in the back because they saw the state he was in."

His leg was broken, hip almost fractured and emotionally this puppy was traumatized. Officer Walker says, "They even thought about amputating the leg. If these things wouldn't work the techniques wouldn't work so we're just happy it turned out in our favor."

Tiffany Cooper saw the whole thing happen. She says, "It was wrong -it was wrong. She just hit him cause there was a crowd of people around here." Officer Walker says, "It is amazing he didn't die or him never trust a human being when you do an animal like that - you send him into trauma."

Now Michele Malone is pressing charges and the Memphis Shelby County Humane Society says it will follow the case until the end. The family of the 16-year-old was served the appropriate papers on the morning of Nov 14 detailing the charges. The teen faces vandalism charges of property under $500.
