On March 30, 2005, the Louisiana State Police picked up five adult pit bull dogs and one pit pup from the Bogalusa Police Department. And a Sandy Hook man was booked on charges of dog fighting.

Brian K. Smith, 26, 172 Stateline Road, who was arrested at 900 Sabine St. in Bogalusa March 25, 2005, was charged with cruelty to animals and with dog fighting.

BPD Animal Control Officer Jimmy Efferson and Capt. Joe Culpepper reportedly seized the dogs and a treadmill that was apparently rigged for their training.

The director and an investigator with the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in New Orleans, as well as state troopers, who have reportedly been involved in other animal cases in the area, worked in cooperation with the BPD on the case.

Police Chief Jerry Agnew said that he is pleased with the team effort on a complex issue.
"We need people to appreciate that dog fighting is not permissible," said Agnew. "There is cruelty involved. And it also goes to gambling. There's going to be somebody betting on who will win."
