Police say an Alexandria (New Hampshire) woman abandoned more than a dozen cats, leaving them in her home without food or water.

Cindy Carter's sister reported she had been missing for about three weeks. Police found Carter on November 4, 2005, but there were no details about where she was. Police say she probably will be charged with animal cruelty.

Police Chief Jeff Musheno says that when he went to Carter's home, the house was full of cat urine, as well as cat and human feces.

Ten cats have been rescued from the home and the New Hampshire Humane Society is still trying to lure other cats into Have-A-Heart traps.

Carter's home was condemned last year because she wasn't complying with sanitation codes. But the town health officer told selectmen at the time that it would be more expensive to clean up the property than to leave Carter alone.
