A family dog was killed after being beaten and smashed through a car window in a horrifying attack at a South Kempsey business on the night of Oct 25.

Kempsey Spares motor wrecking yard was the scene of the awful crime as the killers entered the property, bashed 'Mako' the resident dog and smashed him through a parked car window.

Part owner of the family business Gordon Matthews was almost at a loss for words as he described the attack, and his frustration at the crime in South Kempsey.

In this latest robbery, the petty thieves who killed the dog stole a few small used car parts and some office equipment.

The killers broke in late on that Tuesday night, forced a roller door to gain entry to the building, kicked in the office door and ransacked everything in their path.

Kempsey Police Inspector Michael Giles said the attack on the dog was unprecendented and shocking, and police were treating the matter very seriously.

Mr Giles said while these criminals were still at large, police have been working proactively to apprehend offenders responsible for crimes around Kempsey.

An RSPCA spokeswoman said aggravated cruelty resulting in death currently carries a maximum of two years in jail or a $22,000 fine. However legislation is now being reviewed to increase the maximum to five years, following two severe cases of animal cruelty in Sydney in the past two months.
