Police removed a mother and daughter from what they called a squalid home where the women and lived with 41 animals. Authorities received calls of the women's pets disturbing neighbors, but they never expected to find a flea-infested house with the floor boards and carpets soaked in urine, they said.

Officials took 16 puppies, 14 dogs, three cats, six kittens, and two birds to an animal shelter on Oct 26.

Neighbors had complained about the smell in the past; police cited the women for non-sanitary living conditions and having too many animals. But this is the first time authorities saw just how many pets they had because they had no reason to enter the house before.

The women weren't arrested, but may be charged with animal cruelty, police said. They were taken to a hotel.
