Jennifer Lynn McIntosh told police she works as a veterinary technician at the Animal Hospital of Hyde Park on Skipper Road in North Tampa. But police say McIntosh, 23, wasn't taking care of her own dogs.

McIntosh was arrested on one count of animal cruelty, a felony; and one misdemeanor count of confining animals without adequate food and water. Tampa police Officer Greg Hattle went to her residence, 2106 E Navajo Ave., at the urging of Hillsborough County Animal Control investigators and found two dogs "in pitiful shape," he said.

"It took me about three minutes to figure out what was going on," said Hattle, a crime prevention officer who often deals with animal cruelty cases.

Hattle said two of McIntosh's three pit bull terriers were chained in the back yard without food and water. McIntosh told Hattle she feeds the dogs six cups of food a day, he said, but the officer said that's doubtful, given how emaciated the dogs were and the fact that he found no feces in the yard.

The third pit bull terrier was at the front of the residence, and while it appeared to be well-fed, it had no water, Hattle said. A fourth dog, a poodle mix, was "a little thin" and also had no water, he said.

"These animals were severely mistreated," he said. "They didn't have proper shots, tags or anything."

Jail records show McIntosh was released after posting $2,500 bail.
