Two recent incidents of dog poisonings at neighboring homes along Mulberry Street in Belle Vernon are being investigated by Southwest Regional police. In early October, a female 4-month old boxer-mix puppy named Ginger ate food mixed with antifreeze, according to the dog's owner, Alice Horrell.
On October 24, Horrell's next-door neighbor, Cindy Pelzer, reported to police that her male 2-year-old Rottweiler named Max had been poisoned. Police said the dog became sick on Oct 22 and was taken to VCA Castle Shannon Animal Hospital, Allegheny County, where it was found to have been poisoned.
"Basically, Max was acting really lethargic; he was not acting himself because he's normally enthusiastic. He can swim the river," Pelzer said.
A hospital spokesperson could not disclose what type of poison the dog had ingested, adding that certain poisons are undetectable via toxicology tests. Pelzer said someone may have thrown the dog something toxic over a locked backyard fence. Police found no evidence of poison there.
"Somebody could have purposely gave him spoiled meat, because the one thing the vet mentioned it could be is salmonella," Pelzer said.
Pelzer said she, too, would most likely have to have her dog put down.
Southwest Regional Chief John Hartman said Detective Sgt. James Rega will speak with the Horrell and Pelzer families to try to determine what happened.
"Hopefully, someone will run at the mouth and get busted for this. I'm praying for that," Horrell said.
