The Anderson County Sheriff's Office in a joint effort with the Palestine Police Department seized four pit bulls suspected of dog fighting on Oct 19. The seizure was made at 3:30 p.m. at 909 1/2 S. Fulton St. after the sheriff's department received complaints the day before, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.
Chris Herndon, 22, of Palestine claimed ownership of the dogs when the warrant was served, the sheriff added.
The dogs showed signs of dog fighting, including scars on the face and legs, and one dog had an infected bite on its ear, Taylor said.
Anderson County Justice of the Peace James Westley issued the warrant and a hearing was set for 2 p.m. Oct. 28.
Right now it is a civil action, Taylor said. There is a possibility of criminal charges that could be filed with multiple suspects.
Charges could include dog fighting and animal cruelty.
Herndon received four citations for failure to show current rabies vaccination on the dogs, Taylor said.
Each citation carries a fine of up to $500 each.
The dogs are being held in isolation at the Anderson County Humane society, until the hearing.
If the suspect loses at the hearing there is a possibility the dogs could be destroyed, Taylor said. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
