Police responding to a complaint of cats and dogs being kept in a rented storage unit on Old 27 South suspect the owner of those pets is a homeless man who also may have been living in the storage unit.

State Police troopers from the Gaylord post removed two dogs and cats from the storage unit off Old 27 south of Gaylord on Oct 18 after MSP troopers received anonymous information the domesticated animals were being kept in one of the units.

Investigators indicated on Oct 21 that the 43-year-old Gaylord man who had been renting the storage space since Sept. 25 also may have been living with his pets.

Although a report of the incident has been turned over to the prosecutor for review, investigators indicated they did not believe the man would be facing charges of animal cruelty.

According to the MSP incident report, investigators could hear dogs barking from inside one of the units when they arrived at the scene on Oct 18.

After opening the locked door, troopers found two German Shepherds and two cats inside the storage unit, which was reported to have had an overwhelming odor of urine and feces. Bowls of water and dog food were found inside the building, as was a couch with blankets and pillows.

Animal control was called and the animals were taken to the shelter for adoption.

When interviewed by troopers, the individual renting the unit allegedly denied he was living there and stated the couch was for his dogs to sleep on.

The man, who investigators said was most likely homeless, reportedly contended he was living in his truck and had nowhere else but the storage unit to keep the four animals.
