A San Rafael man was arrested on Jan 15 morning after allegedly shooting his girlfriend and the couples dog, according to San Rafael police.

Police responding to a 911 call from a home in the 100 block of Captains Cove Drive arrived shortly before 10 a.m. to find an 18-year-old Corte Madera woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her hand.

After the woman told them that the shooter was her boyfriend, who had fled the home on foot, police began a search of the neighborhood and eventually located the suspect in a trailer park on nearby Yosemite Road.

Police said Ali Reza Vaziri, 19, was found with the couples dog, which had also been wounded by gunfire. Vaziris girlfriend was reportedly holding the dog when Vaziri opened fire.

Vaziri was taken to the Marin County Jail, where he was booked for willfully discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner resulting in injury, cruelty to an animal, and possession of a firearm after service of an active restraining order, according to police.

His girlfriend was taken to an area hospital for treatment of her wound, which is not life-threatening. The dog, a 5-week-old pit bull, died from its wounds at a local animal hospital.

The gun used in the shooting has not yet been recovered, police said.
