A 5-month-old puppy that suffered a broken hind leg at the hands of its owner is currently recovering in an animal foster care home. Newport police officers responded to a residence on SW Brook Street on Oct. 19 to a report of a man beating a puppy and then throwing it down a flight of stairs.

The dog owner, James Peters, 45, of Newport was arrested and charged with first degree animal abuse. The female black Lab puppy was treated for the broken leg by a local veterinarian. Peters signed over ownership of the dog to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, but because the shelter has no funding to care for this injured animal, it was placed in animal foster care through a non-profit organization called Helping Animals Live On.

Lincoln County Animal Services Officer Jackie Beckstead currently sits as the president of the board for Helping Animals Live On, although that affiliation is unrelated to her job as the county's animal control officer.

The puppy will be X-rayed to determine if the leg is healing properly. If not, surgery will be performed.

Anyone wishing to make a donation toward the puppy's veterinary expenses is asked to contact the shelter and specify the donation is for the non-profit organization, Helping Animals Live On.

The animal shelter may be reached by calling 265-6610
